Abstract

Introduction: Test anxiety is an emotional response experienced by an individual when approaching or taking an exam. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), anxiety disorders are the most common disorders worldwide, affecting 301 million people in 2019. Objective: To determine the level of test anxiety among university nursing students. Materials and methods: A quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 354 first- and second-semester leveling students; of this population, 180 students were selected as a census sample. Instrument: Questionnaire: "Exam Anxiety Assessment," with a validity and reliability score of 0.923 based on Cronbach's alpha. Results: 85.6% were women and only 14.4% were men; regarding age, the 18- to 20-year-old group predominated at 83.4%. Regarding anxiety levels, 33.33% presented low anxiety, 23.33% medium anxiety, 22.22% very low anxiety, and high anxiety, respectively, with only 10% very high anxiety. Negative and anticipatory thoughts related to failure and a perception of low control were identified, along with a tendency toward academic avoidance in cases of high anxiety. Furthermore, higher levels of anxiety were reported in assessments that involve public exposure or direct interaction, such as public oral exams, personal interviews, and classroom presentations. Conclusion: The majority of students presented low anxiety, followed by medium anxiety, and only a small proportion presented very high anxiety, indicating wide variability in emotional response to exams. Implementing interventions targeted at students with moderate to severe anxiety would benefit their psychological well-being and academic performance.
