ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOURISM AT THE HOJAS-JABONCILLO ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX, PICOAZÁ, PORTOVIEJO

Abstract
In Manabí, and particularly in the canton of Portoviejo, archaeological tourism at the Hojas-Jaboncillo Archaeological Complex, located in the parish of Picoazá, faces several factors that affect its optimal development within the local context. Therefore, the objective of this research is to strengthen cultural tourism at the Hojas-Jaboncillo Complex as a contribution to the local development of the Picoazá parish. Regarding the methodology, a mixed-methods approach was used, consisting of two phases: a quantitative field phase and a qualitative documentary phase. Official documents from international organizations and scientific literature were analyzed in order to identify favorable and unfavorable aspects of the destination. In conclusion, the results show that strengthening cultural tourism requires inter-institutional coordination and the development of cooperative capacities and local identity among the population of Picoazá to ensure the economic reactivation of the sector.
