Abstract
High-grade astrocytoma is an infiltrative glial neoplasm of the central nervous system characterized by aggressive behavior and progressive potential. Its diagnosis requires clinical correlation, imaging studies, histopathology, and molecular markers, especially within the current classification of CNS tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging plays a central role, as it allows assessment of lesion location, extension, edema, mass effect, contrast enhancement, and imaging features suggestive of tumor aggressiveness. Clinically, gliomas may be present with headache, focal neurological deficits, cognitive impairment, or seizures. Treatment is usually multimodal and includes surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy according to the histological and molecular profile. In addition, the tumor microenvironment and cellular interactions are important in tumor progression and represent potential future therapeutic targets.
