NURSING PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE FOR HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS

Abstract
Introduction. The performance of nursing professionals in the field of primary health care for people with hypertension covers a set of activities, including: health education, effective communication, clinical follow-up and therapeutic treatment. Objective. To evaluate the performance of nursing professionals in primary health care for hypertensive patients. Methodology. A quantitative research approach was used, with an observational, cross-sectional design and descriptive scope, which included a sample of 56 older adult patients identified with blood pressure, selected through intentional non-probabilistic sampling. A previously validated Likert-type questionnaire was applied to evaluate the dimensions of health promotion, disease prevention, continuous follow-up and adherence to pharmacological treatment. Results. The findings revealed significant deficiencies in important areas. A large percentage (87.5%) of patients reported that they were “never” contacted after missing a scheduled appointment, 75% stated that they “never” received home visits. Likewise, 66.1% indicated that they had “never” received information about the steps to follow in the event of a possible hypertensive crisis. In addition, a large proportion of respondents reported that they “almost never” receive information about treatment adherence and possible side effects. Conclusions. The performance of nursing professionals shows critical areas that require improvement, including personalized education, professional follow-up of patients, and effective communication strategies.
