This research has been carried out with the purpose of analyzing the reading - writing process in fifth grade students of the Gabriela Mistral Educational Unit No. 1 of the Catamayo canton, province of Loja, through field research to improve the academic performance of the students. students. Their problems focus on spelling errors, reading slowly and with little precision, or not understanding what they have read. The research project is added to the positivist paradigm, with a quantitative approach, descriptive and transectional scope, based on data collected in two questionnaires on a sample of 24 students. The project allows teachers and students to be motivated through a proposal for reading-writing workshops to increase academic performance, which will help them meet their goals and enable them to cope with the rise of globalization. It is concluded that the analysis of the reading-writing process in Fifth Year students demonstrates that academic performance is related to reading-writing. Now, the acquisition of skills by this group of students is mostly good and a minority group presents difficulties in decoding, spelling, pronunciation and comprehension.
