DIGITAL READING HABITS IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

This study addresses the transition to the digital era in higher education, focusing on the digital reading habits of students at the Technical University of Manabí. Using a descriptive and exploratory quantitative approach, the reading practices of 250 students were analyzed in relation to their interaction with digital texts, particularly in PDF format. The study aimed to assess how these habits affect reading comprehension and efficiency. To this end, surveys in Google Forms and statistical analyses with SPSS were used, looking for correlations between reading habits, preferences, and reading efficiency. The results reveal a marked preference for paper reading, with a significant majority of students opting for this traditional format. There is also a tendency for limited printing of digital materials and a persistence in conventional annotation practices, such as underlining and writing comments in the text. On the other hand, there is a relatively low familiarity with digital annotation techniques, reflected in the minority of students who know and apply them. It is concluded that, despite the omnipresence of digital technology, students show an inclination towards reading and annotating on paper, which may indicate a deeper and more reflective interaction with physical texts. This finding underscores the importance of a hybrid educational approach that not only incorporates digital tools but also values traditional study techniques, adapting to the needs and preferences of contemporary learning.
