Abstract
Restoration with composite resin for deep cavities in the posterior sector is a procedure that is questioned by the dental community due to the high susceptibility to fracture that these restorations often present in clinical reality. However, the development of new resins has provided a solution to this problem through the creation of improved resins with filling materials that are capable of resisting masticatory forces. Objective: To compare the fracture resistance of glass fiber-reinforced resin blocks and bulk fill resin blocks using a universal testing machine. Methodology: 20 specimens (n=10) consisting of 10 bulk fill resin blocks and 10 glass fiber reinforced resin blocks with a 2 mm sharp central notch on one of their edges were made. The blocks were preserved for 24 hours in a heating oven at 37°C and then exposed to a 3-point bending test using a universal testing machine to achieve longitudinal fracture of the specimen. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23 and the Student's t-test was performed to determine the statistically significant difference between the two groups. Results: The glass fiber-reinforced composite obtained fracture toughness values of 2.99 Mpa – m1/2 while the bulk fill composite obtained results of 1, 61 Mpa – m1/2 with a p-significance of 0.05. Conclusions: The fracture load required to cause fracture of the specimens was significantly higher in the glass fiber reinforced resins than in the bulk fill resins.
