emocional.

Abstract
Academic self-esteem is a cornerstone of higher education, directly influencing student
performance, motivation, self-concept, and retention. However, the persistence of gender
prejudices and stereotypes within the university environment can undermine students' self-
perception of their individual capabilities, leading to demotivation or insecurity. In the Ecuadorian
context—particularly within teacher training—cultural constructs that shape socio-educational
relationships still persist. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between levels
of gender prejudice and academic self-esteem among students at the Faculty of Educational,
Human, and Technological Sciences of the National University of Chimborazo (UNACH). The
research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational scope, a basic research type, and
a non-experimental, cross-sectional design. Data collection took place on the university campus.
The sample consisted of 76 students from the first (61.8%) and seventh (38.2%) semesters of the
Pedagogy of Physical Activity and Sports program, selected through non-probability purposive
sampling. The gender distribution was 82.9% male and 17.1% female. Two psychometric Likert-
scale questionnaires were used for data collection: the Gender Equality Inventory (5 items) to
measure attitudes toward gender equality, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (10 items) to
assess academic self-worth. The collected data were processed using SPSS statistical software.
Results and Discussion: Regarding gender prejudice, the majority of participants reported a
favorable perception of institutional equity: 92.1% affirmed that equal academic opportunities exist
for both genders, 81.6% rejected the notion that women are less heard in class, and 69.7% denied
that professional success depends on gender. Nevertheless, traditional biases were evident;
Notably, 35.6% acknowledged that men are judged negatively when they display sensitivity or
empathy. Regarding academic self-esteem, high levels of self-confidence predominated: 93.4%
perceive themselves as valuable individuals, 93.5% recognize their own qualities, 94.6% consider
themselves as capable as their peers, and over 77% rejected feelings of worthlessness or failure.
Despite this positive trend, an at-risk subgroup (between 18% and 22%) showed emotional
vulnerability manifested in negative self-perceptions. The study concludes that the population
exhibits a high level of academic self-esteem and a general perception of equal opportunities.
However, underlying prejudices linked to hegemonic masculinity and emotional restriction persist.
Given the low correlation between variables, gender prejudices do not act as direct predictors of
academic success in this sample. Recommendations include implementing workshops to
deconstruct stereotypes, strengthening psycho-educational support services, and integrating a
gender perspective across the faculty's curricula.
